how it’s done

Refining

The gold obtained from smelting isn’t usually pure enough for commercial use. To refine the gold further, additional processes are needed. One common method is to use chemicals like cyanide to dissolve the impurities while leaving the gold intact. Another method is electrolysis, where an electric current is passed through the gold to separate impurities.

Casting into Bullion

After the gold has been refined to a satisfactory level of purity, it is then cast into bullion bars or other desired shapes. The molten gold is poured into molds and allowed to cool and solidify. These bullion bars can vary in size and weight, depending on the requirements of the market and the refining facility.

Assaying and Quality Control

Before the gold bullion is considered ready for market, it goes through an assaying process to determine its purity and quality. Assaying involves testing a sample of the gold to determine its exact composition. This step ensures that the gold meets the required standards and is accurately labeled.

Packaging and Distribution

Once the gold bullion has passed quality control checks, it is packaged and prepared for distribution to buyers or storage in vaults. The bullion is often stamped with markings that indicate its purity, weight, and origin.
